Objectives
SMART Village Foundation is dedicated to empowering smallholder and medium farmers in Tanzania. Our mission is to enhance the livelihoods, economic growth, and food security of rural communities through sustainable agricultural practices. By fostering environmentally sustainable farming methods, we ensure long-term productivity and ecological balance, creating a foundation for continued agricultural success.
A key goal of SMART is to boost rural employment by converting agricultural opportunities into tangible economic activities that generate jobs in rural areas. We facilitate market access by connecting farmers with reliable markets, enabling them to sell their produce at fair prices and increase their income and marketability.
To achieve these goals, SMART focuses on several key objectives.
- We engage in facilitatig linkages to financial and agricultural inputs by connecting farmers to microfinance institutions and input suppliers. We provide training in gross margin analysis and financial planning to ensure farmers can effectively manage their resources. Leadership and governance training is another crucial objective, aimed at developing strong leadership skills and promoting good governance practices within farmer groups and associations.
- Facilitating contract farming is a vital part of our strategy. We assist in negotiating and signing contracts between smallholder farmers and business partners, monitoring these partnerships to ensure sustainable and independent relationships. Extension services are provided to educate farmers on modern agricultural practices and technologies, boosting productivity and sustainability.
- Post-harvest handling support helps farmers reduce losses and maintain product quality, enhancing their marketability. We establish market linkages to connect farmers with reliable market channels. Participatory monitoring and evaluation involve farmers and stakeholders in assessing the progress and outcomes of agricultural activities and partnerships, ensuring continuous improvement and ownership of the processes.
- SMART engage in community mobilization and sensitization to raise awareness and help communities identify and seize business opportunities in agriculture. Organizational support and capacity building are critical components of our approach; we form farmer groups and associations or cooperatives and enhance their skills in organizational management, entrepreneurship, technical farming practices, and farm planning
- Further more, SMART focuses on value addition and market systems development to enhance value chains and support environmental sustainability. By adding value to agricultural products and improving market systems, we ensure that farmers can achieve better returns and contribute to sustainable economic development. Through these comprehensive efforts, SMART Village Foundation strives to empower rural communities and promote sustainable agricultural growth across mainland Tanzania
