About Us

SMART VILLAGE FOUNDATION (SMART) is a non-governmental, non-political, non-ethnic, non-religious and independent Organization  that was established in 2011 and later officially registered under the NGO Act No. 24/2002 on June 4th, 2012 with Reg. No. 00NGO/00005610 with about 17 founding members. The organization is headquartered in Kigoma Municipal. The office may also be relocated to any location to meet the needs of the community in the Tanzania mainland.

The organization was established upon recognizing that smallholder farmers often struggle to capitalize on the growing entrepreneurial opportunities brought by improved agricultural extension services, market liberalization, post harvest handling techniques and private agro-industrial investment in Tanzania.  SMART identifies and promotes Farming as business opportunities in rural areas, supporting smallholder farmers in converting these opportunities into tangible economic activities that boost income and generate employment in rural Tanzania.

SMART offers a sustainable business model that empowers the rural poor to produce what the market demands. Interventions include community mobilization and sensitization for business opportunities; organizing farmers into groups and subsequently into associations or cooperatives; and building their capacity in various areas such as organizational skills, entrepreneurship, technical skills, farming as a business, farm planning, linkage to microfinance, gross margin analysis, linkage to input suppliers, leadership, good governance, and contract farming arrangements.

SMART also facilitates contract negotiations and signing between smallholder producer groups and potential business partners (buyers/traders/processors) at every phase of the partnership process. This linkage is monitored until the farmers can sustain their relationships with buyers/traders/processors and other stakeholders and partners independently. The ownership of these processes by smallholder farmers is reinforced through participatory monitoring and evaluation, as well as participatory end-of-season evaluation, which involves different stakeholders and chain players.

SMART places a strong emphasis on providing extension services, market linkage, and post-harvest handling support. Extension services involve educating farmers on modern agricultural practices and technologies to enhance productivity and sustainability. Market linkage efforts connect farmers to reliable markets, ensuring they can sell their produce at fair prices. Post-harvest handling assistance helps farmers reduce losses and maintain the quality of their products, thereby enhancing their marketability and profitability.
